Barbecue Steak with Spicy Stir Fry Vegetables

A very quick meal to whip up for the family on the Barbecue on a Friday night with a scotch (or your favourite beverage) in hand :-). This recipe feeds three. (Just adjust the quantity of steak to feed more). Takes 25 minutes total preparation and cooking time.

Ingredients:
  • 3 x Scotch Fillet Steaks (Or use steak of your choosing)
  • Corn Cobs (boiled)
  • Green Beans (steamed)
  • 100 grams fresh Mushrooms (chopped in to halves)
  • 3 x Carrots (chopped in the julienned for fast frying).
  • 2 x teaspoons of butter
  • 1 x teaspoon of Sambal Oelek (If you don't like the heat from chilli, try Peri Peri flakes as they are more mild).
  • 1 x teaspoon of Garlic
  • 1 x cup of Bean Sprouts
  • 4 x teaspoons of Sesame Seeds
  • 1 x teaspoon of Peanut Oil (for that asian flavour).
  • 1/2 a finely chopped Onion.

Method:

  • The corn cobs and steamed beans will take the longest to cook, so start with them first..
  • Cut up your corn, then place in a pot of water and bring it to the boil for about 15 minutes.
  • Top and tail the green beans and place in a colander above a pot of water and bring to the boil. The beans are best served a little firm, so lift them off the hotplate after 10 minutes of boiling. But leave them on top of the pot while the other parts of the meal are cooking.

Stir Fry Spicy Vegetables

  • Stir fry the following ingredients in a heavy fry pan or a wok. (I fry mine up on the side burner of the BBQ).
  • Chop up your mushrooms, and carrots and add them to the heavy pan.
  • Add three teaspoons of butter (and a little oil so the butter does not burn)
  • Add a teaspoon of Sambal Oelek and a teaspoon of crushed garlic.
  • Add your julienned carrots
  • Add your onion, bean sprouts and sesame seeds about 2 minutes before you are finished cooking.
  • Salt to taste (1/2 teaspoon)

Barbecue Steak

  • Place steaks on the barbecue and cook till tender (2 minutes each side for medium well).

Serving:

  • Preheat your plates in top of the barbecue (or in your oven).
  • Allow your steaks to sit to two minutes before serving (this relaxes steak so it's more tender).
  • Add a few large spoons of the spicy stir fry vegetables.
  • Add corn and steamed beans.
  • Enjoy with your favourite Friday afternoon beverage. :-)
